Responsible for providing tutoring to Brandman University students. Offers writing assistance through the online submission system, virtual appointments, writing tutorials and workshops, editing and writing creative content, and other assistance, as appropriate.

This is a part-time position working anywhere from 5-19 hours a week depending on the time of year and students needing assistance. This is a remote position and can be based in any US State.

TYPE OF SUPERVISION:

Receive supervision from the Tutoring Program Manager.

Supervision — indicates that the incumbent performs a variety of routine duties within established policies and procedures or by referral to the supervisor’s guidelines.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Review and offer feedback on essays submitted through the online submission system.

  • Prepare tutoring materials and appropriate learning activities for OWMC workshops and small groups to support student-learning goals.
  • Determine and prepare appropriate resources to supplement 1-on-1 tutoring sessions including any specialized writing assistance to students whose primary language is not English as well as those with disabilities.

  • Review and offer feedback on essays submitted through the online submission system.

  • Collaborate with CII and OWMC staff to identify writing projects both creative and academic to complete.

  • Maintain and communicate records of student progress, as needed, including challenges and successes.

  • Communicate with faculty as assigned/requested to provide comprehensive writing support for students in their respective programs.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Skilled in using virtual communication software such as, ZOOM, Hangouts, Slack, email, etc.
  • Skilled in Google Suite tools for collaboration with team members and students
  • Excellent communication skills to provide clear and concise feedback to students, teachers, and staff
  • Ability to develop content for asynchronous trainings/workshops for the resources section of the OWMC website
  • Ability to develop and teach online workshops
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with regard to student needs
  • Ability to work online to provide services to students and meet with team members
  • Ability to occasionally work weekends and/or evenings
  • Proven ability to develop characters, story structure, and assimilate complicated information into a cohesive interesting dialogue or narration, preferred
  • Fluency in spoken and written secondary language, preferred

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, rhetoric/composition, creative writing or related field
  • Master’s degree, preferred
  • Experience with computer-enhanced writing instruction, preferred
  • Experience working in an online setting, preferred
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring ESL and/or ELL students in an online setting, preferred
  • College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification, preferred
