Visual UI Designer

Job Description

We’re passionate about our mission to radically transform the way the world learns. Today, our Intelligent Adaptive Learning platform – with its rigorous math curriculum and game-based environment – is helping 5 million kids and over 150,000 educators improve math achievement and build a love of math at the same time. In the wake of COVID-19, and the broad range of learning experiences: in-person, all virtual and hybrid models, we are uniquely positioned to bring our best-in-class adaptive learning platform to more students and provide Educators and Parents with insights into their student’s learning.

About the Role
As a Visual (UI) Designer at DreamBox Learning, you will work with a team of UX Designers, UI Designers, Artists, Curriculum Designers (teachers), and Software Engineers to create engaging and visually stunning “virtual tools” and engaging experiences that teach math to millions of students from Kindergarten to 8th grade. This process involves working with product teams to gain a deep understanding of our users to transform complex math concepts into beautiful, easy-to-use, and intuitive experiences that work for all ages.

You will be building and improving our visual design pattern system for lessons and engagement, translating UX clickables into visually pleasing and functional user interfaces for lessons and the engagement platform, communicating design thinking with stakeholders and development teams, and partnering with Artists and Engineers in the execution of UI designs in the production environment. This role requires an understanding of how to create beautiful, interactive visuals for a wide range of student ages–from kindergarten to middle school–within the technical constraints of web-based software and touchscreen devices.

The Visual (UI) Designer will also help champion best practices and set a high bar for visual design in the overall student experience. Our work environment is fast-paced and highly collaborative: excellent cross-discipline communication and presentation skills and attention to detail are a must! This role will report to our Senior Art Director in Bellevue, WA.

  • Schedule 1:1s with key team members to introduce yourself and understand how Design and Art groups partner with development teams to create lesson content.

  • Play the student product to familiarize yourself with our lessons and engagements and learn how DreamBox adapts to each student.
  • Get up to speed on the existing design system and patterns for our lesson UI in Figma.
  • Familiarize yourself with the content development pipeline, workflows, and design documentation.
  • Embed yourself in a project team to get started on your first project.
  • Create visual UI designs in Figma for our lesson UI based on existing UX wireframes while following existing visual styles and design patterns.
  • Present visual UI designs to stakeholders and team members, communicate design thinking, and modify designs as needed based on feedback.
  • Provide callouts and specs for Artists and Engineering to inform art asset creation and development.
  • Partner with other Artists, UX Designers, and Developers in the creation and implementation of UI assets using Adobe Animate into the product build.
  • Support the Art Director in reviews of implemented visuals during development and prior to release.
  • Help to maintain and add to the existing visual design system and patterns for the student product.
  • Address UI or visual bugs and feedback.
  • Have successfully taken ownership of the visual UI design for at least one lesson project, from early design ideation to release-ready.
  • Take ownership in building, maintaining, and evolving visual systems & style guides.
  • Own the Art reviews for your project(s) to make sure the implemented visuals appear as expected and meet the quality bar.
  • Be able to balance multiple design projects in various stages of development.
  • Provide design input and support for other projects.
  • When needed, partner with Designers and Artists in any project needs for student engagement and occasional Marketing support.
  • Participate in any relevant User Research sessions to learn more about how our users engage with lessons and engagement and how the product can be improved.
  • Help champion quality, industry-standard design aesthetics and best practices as it applies to lessons and engagement.
  • Participate in a company-sponsored hackathon.
  • Reflect on mid-term performance with your manager and identify areas of growth.
