Job Description

The role

Our digital products and services are used by millions of people all over the world. As part of our ambitious plans to expand our product portfolio and impact, we are now looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join our team.

Youll need to have excellent technical skills and an appetite to learn what you dont already know. You should be able to tackle a range of problems and exercise good judgement based on substantial experience of building accessible and performant digital products. It is also important that you are committed to making a difference for our users.

Youll work within an agile team of Product Managers, Product Designers, and Software Engineers based remotely around the UK and Ireland. Together, you will create digital products and services that have a positive impact on our audiences: the users of the 40+ million Raspberry Pi computers sold to date, and hundreds of thousands of young learners across the world. Recently weve worked on projects such as:

  • Bringing Coolest Projects, the worlds leading technology fair for young people, online to an audience of thousands of children in 47 countries
  • Launching our new, more performant, accessible, and energy-efficient homepage, viewed by millions of users each month
  • Providing a comprehensive set of free-to-access lesson plans and materials for young learners through the Teach Computing Curriculum, created by subject experts and based on the latest pedagogical research

How youll help us

  • Lead the development of platforms, products, and services across the Raspberry Pi Foundation, with a focus on improving outcomes for users and meeting the needs of the Foundations strategic objectives
  • Ensure the team is shipping high-quality software with measurable impact
  • Analyse requirements in close collaboration with our Product Managers in order to promote pragmatic technical solutions
  • Work across teams in collaboration with other engineering leaders at the Foundation to improve processes, code quality, and documentation across our projects
  • Build consensus and take accountability for delivering entire products, through clear communication, technical credibility, and empathy
  • Prioritise the teams backlog in order to provide them with meaningful and structured work, and help unblock their workflow when they encounter obstacles
  • Line-manage, coach, and mentor Software Engineers and Senior Software Engineers within the team
  • Establish a deep understanding of our systems and be proactive about finding ways to improve release processes, resilience, and stability

Experience and personal attributes

You should have:

  • Significant experience working as a professional Software Engineering Manager with a focus on web technologies
  • A proactive, pragmatic, and supportive attitude, along with being happy to provide and receive constructive feedback; if you see something that can be improved, you act on it
  • In-depth experience of a high-level language such as Ruby, JavaScript, or Python, and of an RDBMS (such as PostgreSQL)
  • Excellent debugging and software-profiling skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including demonstrable experience of line management, and a collaborative approach to working effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team
  • Experience of successfully leading teams to deliver products and services from concept through to production, particular those operating at scale
  • The skills to balance multiple priorities and deal with ambiguity
  • The ability to ensure the team has a situational awareness of each others work

We welcome applicants with (but in no way require):

  • Experience of Ruby on Rails and React
  • A background in architecting and managing infrastructure on platforms such as Heroku, Cloudflare, and AWS, using tools and services such as Terraform and CircleCI
  • An interest in education, especially around computer science, physical computing, and digital making

Timetable for applications

Closing date: 10:00am, Thursday 25th November

Interviews: Well first organise a 20-minute phone interview no later than the week of 29th November, followed, if successful, by two 'face-to-face' interviews shortly afterwards. Interviews will be conducted remotely, and we can be flexible with scheduling to accommodate your needs.

Well also ask you to complete a short coding task (with a weeks notice), which you should spend no more than three hours of your time on, and which you will walk us through it during one of the interviews.

Youll have an opportunity to meet members of the wider team for an informal session, and there won't be any whiteboard coding nor questions designed to trip you up. We aim for the process to be as fair as possible and always value your feedback.
